Portal Bridge decay is a problem, but what lies beneath could be even more dangerous

The rail links along America’s Eastern Seaboard play a crucial role in supporting the nation’s economy -- and that's not fake news. A study from the Regional Plan Association showed that just a partial tunnel shutdown — to repair one of the two existing tubes — would cost $16 billion in economic activity. In New Jersey alone, 38,000 rail riders who commute to New York City would have to find alternate ways to get to work. Property values would likely fall by $22 billion.
