As urbanists such as Jane Jacobs and William Whyte have observed, communities need streets, sidewalks, public spaces and a mix of activities to come to life. A quick survey of development patterns shows that simply re-zoning an area isn't enough to create vibrant, 24/7 neighborhoods. This workshop will look at the role that public amenities will play in creating a true 21st Century district on the Far West Side. What impact will the actions proposed in the City's plan Ð new parks and plazas, a football stadium and expanded convention center, connection to Hudson River Park Ð have on the new neighborhood? What principles can help ensure the creation of truly excellent public spaces?
