Internships
Governors Island Alliance Internship, Spring 2012The Governors Island Alliance (GIA, www.governorsislandalliance.org), a project of RPA is now seeking to hire a spring intern to assist managing the public outreach programs for the Island, planning this season's programs and assisting in GIA advocacy efforts. The position will report to the Robert Pirani, Executive Director of the Governors Island Alliance, and Maya Borgenicht, GIA's Director of Public Programs. The work will take place in the Union Square office of GIA/ Regional Plan Association (RPA), with some trips to the Island.
Specific duties include: Contributing to monthly GIA e-newsletter, preparation and support for summer 2012 season programs, assisting with pre-season volunteer events, managing public outreach groups and list serve, and assisting in fund raising efforts for GIA.
Requirements include: excellent organizational and people skills, excellent writing skills and knowledge of MS Word and Excel. Knowledge of Adobe InDesign and Illustrator a plus. Internship duration: January 2012 - May 2012

Regional Plan Association Summer Internship Program
Regional Plan Association is a non-profit research, planning and advocacy
organization whose purpose is to develop long-term plans for the New York metropolitan
region that consider the environmental, economic, and social impacts of growth
and the region's capacity for development. Each summer RPA hires summer interns
to work with staff on a wide variety of projects.
RPA is seeking undergraduate and graduate students with strong writing and research abilities and an interest in regional policy. Relevant areas of study include urban planning, architecture and urban design, environmental studies, transportation, and economic development.
Summer internships are full time, based in RPA's Manhattan
office or satellite offices in Princeton, NJ and Stamford,
CT. RPA's summer internship
program runs from the beginning of June through the end of August. Internships
are generally unpaid, but offer great opportunity in experience and practical
training. Summer interns also gain exposure to a wide variety of projects
through weekly brown bag presentations with members of the RPA staff. RPA is an

Centers Community Engagement Program Summer InternshipRPA is developing course materials and curriculum for engaging local land use planners and citizen advocates. The focus of these courses (which will include half-day, full-day, and multi-day options) is to educate this constituency in best practice town planning with a focus on infill redevelopment and transit oriented development. Many of the materials have been produced by RPA and exist in draft form, but they need to be re-organized and in some cases reformatted and consolidated into a packet of teaching materials which will be used in the engagement program. The structure of the program itself is still in development, but is anticipated to be finalized by late spring 2012. Term is flexible but the preferred time frame is from mid-May/early June through August. This internship is currently unpaid.
Responsibilities include: Working with Senior staff in the Community Design Program to develop the curriculum; help organize existing RPA resources; work with Community Design Program staff and the RPA design department to develop a consistent graphic identity for the course materials; survey existing RPA resources to identify strategic gaps in the RPA course materials; undertake additional research to complete the course materials package.
Qualifications: currently enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate planning or urban design program; skilled in the Adobe suite of graphics programs (Illustrator, Photoshop and InDesign); some familiarity with web site development/management preferred.

Regional Plan Association's rolling GIS internship program
RPA uses maps and geographic analysis on a variety of projects across the New York-New Jersey-Connecticut region. As an intern, you will actively contribute to project, gaining useful experience of GIS in use in a range of planning, research and advocacy work.
A good understanding of ArcGIS software is required. Demonstrated competence with cartographic work is also appreciated. Potential interns with skills or interest in learning any of the following are especially encouraged to apply: Python scripting, ArcObjects, metadata, data management, raster catalogs, AJAX web-based mapping.
Internships can run part-time, or full-time. For example, a typical internship could last for several months, working one day per week at our Manhattan office. Internships are generally unpaid, but offer great opportunity in experience and practical training.
