Trouble in the Suburbs - RPA on the Brian Lehrer Show

A surprising trend has emerged in the tri-state area's economic performance in recent years: The suburbs are losing ground to New York City. Job growth in the suburbs is failing to keep up with New York, poverty is accelerating at a faster rate and housing construction is lagging behind the city. These emerging suburban struggles, which mark a sharp turnaround from a long record of strong suburban growth, pose a threat to the region's prosperity, which depends on the success of a diverse range of communities. On WNYC's Brian Lehrer Show, Juliette Michaelson, who oversees the Fourth Regional Plan initiative at RPA, discussed RPA's recent research on the suburbs and what might be behind the trend.
