RPA Comments on House GOP Amtrak Privatization Scheme

RPA submitted comments today on the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee's "Competition for Intercity Passenger Rail in America Act of 2011." This draft legislation, announced by Chairman John Mica and Representative Bill Shuster on June 15 proposes to transfer ownership of the Northeast Corridor to US DOT and solicit bids from the private sector to build and operate world class high-speed rail service on the Corridor. RPA views this as a positive first step toward implementing world class high-speed rail in the Northeast Corridor but cautions that the existing corridor's state of good repair needs, totaling $8.8 billion, must be addressed by the public sector. The draft legislation also proposes to open up state-sponsored and long-distance passenger rail corridors to competition with Amtrak, to which RPA objects.
