Scott Rechler, the real estate executive who until recently served as Gov. Andrew Cuomo's appointed vice chair of the Port Authority, doesn’t think the Port, as is, makes much sense in the 21st century. “The bi-state nature of the Port Authority makes sense in theory,” said Rechler, according to a copy of prepared remarks he delivered this morning before the Regional Plan Association, which he now chairs. “But in practice, it masks ultimate accountability and creates inefficiencies.”
