The car ban also helped turn Time Square into "one of the most vibrant public spaces in New York City," said Alyssa Pichardo, senior planner for transportation at the Regional Plan Association. "It's not just a place where people congregate on New Year's Eve," she said. Pichardo and David Burney, a professor of urban planning at Pratt Institute who served as Bloomberg's commissioner of design and development, believe it may now be time to ban cars from Seventh Avenue at Times Square as well.​
