East Camden, a diverse and growing neighborhood within the City of Camden, could become a place with more vibrant commercial districts, an enhanced industrial area, greater opportunities for recreation and an improved quality of life, a study by a consortium of community groups and planners found.
My East Camden, a neighborhood plan completed by St. Joseph’s Carpenter Society, Cooper’s Ferry Partnership and Regional Plan Association, highlights the extraordinary opportunities of the East Camden community and offers strategies for residents, business and civic leaders to help put that vision in place. My East Camden, a community-driven initiative that engaged more than 700 residents and community leaders, provides current and in-depth research on demographics, commercial activity, land use and transportation. The plan suggests ways to improve neighborhood conditions, including fostering commercial revitalization and economic development, improving housing and enhancing culture, arts and open space. In particular, East Camden’s industrial area was found to be an opportune zone for revitalization. My East Camden recommends consideration of a new mixed-use production district and transit-oriented development in the industrial area, in connection with the neighborhood’s existing commercial districts and a proposed shopping plaza.
The individuals and institutions who came together to shape the neighborhood plan believe that East Camden can harness its substantial advantages to enrich the quality of life for all residents.
In March, the City of Camden incorporated My East Camden into the city's master plan, paving the way for the neighborhood's revitalization to move forward.
