Letter: New Rochelle's Smart To Seek Millennials

Phil Reisman’s criticism of New Rochelle’s efforts to revitalize its downtown is both shortsighted and based on unfortunate stereotypes. Successful communities have a variety of housing choices and a mix of incomes, ethnicities and generations, including, yes, millennials, whom some New Rochelle residents might less caustically call “our children.” The city’s downtown plan aspires to much more than attracting affluent young singles, with commercial development and public improvements in addition to housing. The greater risk for cities like New Rochelle is that their economies, services and housing stock will deteriorate if they fail to make their downtowns work for existing and new residents alike.
