How immigrants helped save New York City

As the President whips his supporters into a “send her back” frenzy, one op-ed, think piece and social media post after another waves the flag about the symbolic implications of his actions.

This is a watershed moment for the American identity. A dramatic narrative pivot from “bring us your tired, your hungry, your poor,” signifying we simply aren’t the country we once were.

But in addition to the symbolic weight of our shift to nationalism, it’s equally important to recall that immigrants quite literally saved our country’s urban and economic centers, more than once.
