Governors Island is a special place. Just a half mile from Manhattan and Brooklyn, the Island's massive stone fortifications, shady green lawns, and sweeping harbor views make it an undiscovered waterfront gem. And its incredible history - from the Revolution to the Cold War - makes it a touchstone for understanding the nation's past. The Governors Island Alliance is the leading civic voice for the Island and its redevelopment in the public interest. Our coalition secured the Island's return to the City and State for public purposes and continues to push for the creation of 110 acres of parks and public spaces, including Governors Island National Monument. The Alliance's free public programs have brought tens of thousands of people to the Island, introducing families and friends to a piece of New York off-limits for more than two centuries. The Governors Island Alliance has created a set of illustrated guidelines for the parks and public spaces on the 172 acre Island. Highlighted within the guidelines are three illustrated alternative visions for the Island's future. The Alliance is working with the National Park Service and the Governors Island Preservation And Education Corporation (GIPEC) to see these guidelines adopted in the public plans now being developed for the island.
