Yesterday, the New York City Council voted overwhelmingly to pass the Greener, Greater Buildings plan - the biggest step yet in achieving carbon reduction goals outlined in Mayor Bloomberg's PlaNYC initiative. The plan is expected to protect and improve the environment, save money, and improve economic conditions and establishes New York as a national leader in reducing building emissions.RPA helped craft the plan as a member of Mayor Bloomberg's Sustainability Advisory Committee and has been supportive in recent testimony. The package of four bills - which includes lighting upgrades, benchmarking energy and water efficiencies of buildings, establishing a New York City energy code and requiring audits and retrofits of certain buildings - targets reduction in carbon coming from buildings in the city, the single largest contributor of city emissions.
