Regional Plan Association joined with Tri-State Transportation Campaign, Capitol Region Council of Governments, and Transit for Connecticut in sponsoring a symposium on Thursday, October 15th on how clean, efficient, rapid bus service can form a crucial link in Connecticut's public transit network. The Keynote Speaker was Joe Calabrese of the Greater Cleveland Regional Transit District, who shepherded the construction of the Euclid Avenue Health Line, a 10 mile corridor which has experienced a 40% increase in ridership in the year since BRT replaced existing local bus service. Mr. Calabrese demonstrated how his region's BRT system meets transit needs that were not satisfied by Cleveland's existing commuter rail, light rail, and traditional bus routes. Connecticut is in the planning stages of one major BRT project, the New Britain-Hartford Busway, and is considering BRT-type upgrades on several other crucial transit corridors
