The Sunday edition of the Hartford Courant featured an op-ed by RPA Vice President David Kooris which emphasized the need for land use planning to mirror ongoing transit initiatives. Several large transit projects are in the planning stages which will provide residents with new options for moving around the state and region. New rail, rapid busway and light rail lines can make Connecticut more competitive in the national and global economies and attract residents, jobs and capital, but only if future development is supports transit use. The federal government is advancing major initiatives to support integrated land use and transit projects, including the Livable Communities Act of 2009, recently introduced by Senator Dodd, which will provide incentives for regional and interstate planning. Cooperation at the regional scale between all levels of government will be necessary to ensure that these transit investments result in the social, economic, and environmental benefits which they hold the potential to achieve.
