Help keep
New York moving!
Do you want to join the fight against the MTA's doomsday
budget and support investment for mass transit? If yes, join us tomorrow,
January 8, as we leaflet the Union Square Station from
7:30-9:30am.
On December 17, the Board of the Metropolitan
Transportation Authority approved its so-called austerity budget, which
dramatically decreases service and increases fares on
New York's buses, subways and commuter rail service.
Without intervention by the State legislature, this budget will go into effect
on July 1, creating unconscionable damage to
New York commuters and the regional economy.
The conditions at
Union
Square illustrate the need to invest in mass
transit. During the morning rush, the
Lexington
Avenue subway and station platforms are so crowded
that passengers must often wait for 2 - 3 trains to pass before they can board.
These conditions should improve if the first segment of the Second Avenue
Subway is funded in the capital budget and completed in 2015.
