Brooklyn Waterfront Greenway

Waterfront Greenway When complete, the Brooklyn Waterfront Greenway will be a 14-mile safe, landscaped off-street route connecting neighbors and neighborhoods to four major parks and over a dozen local open spaces on Brooklyn's historic waterfront.  Separate paths for bicycles and pedestrians will allow cyclists and walkers to commute, exercise, explore, and relax from Newtown Creek to the Shore Parkway.  It's a major element in the revitalization of this critical regional asset, filled with vibrant neighborhoods and important maritime uses.  Regional Plan Association (RPA) and the non profit Brooklyn Greenway Initiative (BGI) are collaborating on the planning and advocacy for this waterfront amenity.

RPA and BGI have developed concept plans for Community Boards 1, 2, and 6 - from Greenpoint to Red Hook - with on-going funding from the state's Environmental Protection Fund/Local Waterfront Revitalization Program sponsored by the Office of the Brooklyn Borough President.  These plans, based on community workshops in 2004 and 2007, set out goals, identify the specific route and partners, and outline key steps toward implementation.  We have created Design Guidelines and a Stewardship Plan which will identify management options for the completed route.  We chair an ongoing Technical Advisory Committee (TAC) of more than 100 representatives of public agencies, elected officials, and local community boards.  RPA and BGI will be working the TAC and other local civic partners with the New York City Department of Transportation as it prepares a Master Plan for the Greenway in 2009.  Congresswoman Nydia Velazquez has already secured $ 14 million to help build the Greenway.  The completion of the City's Master is a critical step in securing the balance of the capital funding needed to complete the project.
